Gabriel appeared, somehow managing to look both well-groomed and stylish. He would make a fortune as a model, Megan thought, with that nonchalant elegance that drew the eye.

“We have a free day,” he told her. “Most of the wedding party are busy rehearsing, so I thought we should spend the day exploring the city.”

“Oh, could we?” The idea was appealing. Much as she liked the O’Sullivan party, they were a bit overwhelming en masse and reminded her that she was out of her depth. God knows she’d spent enough time with Brad, trying to please his mother and pretending to be something she wasn’t. She didn’t enjoy having to do it here too.

It would be fun to just be a tourist.

And you want to spent time alone with Gabriel, a tiny voice jeered inside her. She ignored it. What happened in Buenos Aires stayed in Buenos Aires. So what if he was the most attractive man she had met in years? She was a big girl, and she would take care of her own heart.

She decided to walk to the city centre and she changed her shoes. Given the curse of her pale Irish skin, she slapped on a layer of sun cream and a big hat, but was surprised to see Gabriel was also wearing a hat. He managed to look cool and comfortable in the heat. Then she realised the hat shaded the worst of his scars.

When had she stopped noticing them?

Buenos Aires was a bewildering mass of sight, sound and smell. The architecture was a mix of splendour and squalid, with ancient buildings only a block away from colourful shanties and cabañas. The smell of tropical flowers and pungent spices fought with smoke from street vendors, dusty streets and the sweat of jostling crowds. The air hummed with insects, music and voices speaking Spanish, English and Italian.

“Have you been here before?” she asked.

Gabriel took her arm as they walked along a wide boulevard that could have been in Paris. His touch was protective but didn’t make her feel confined. Instinctively, she moved a little closer to him.

“I was here a couple of years ago, dancing with Sinead. We stayed here for three weeks, but we were working all the time, so I’m almost as much of a tourist as you are.”

Megan was torn between wanting to watch Gabriel’s reaction and the fascination of the city itself. Despite her desire to appear worldly and sophisticated, she knew she was rubber-necking like an idiot.

“How many dogs does he have?” she asked pointing to a man roller-skating along with at least ten dogs of different breeds on leads. The dogs yipped and yapped and pulled enthusiastically, so he didn’t have to put any effort into moving.

“They’re not his. He’s a dog walker,” Gabriel told her. “It’s a career here in Buenos Aires. People love their dogs.”

They strolled around the Plaza before sitting in an outdoor cafe where they could people watch. “This is a city of amazingly beautiful people,” she remarked.
